AK-V Tufting Gun Guide: Setup, Threading, Care & Loop Pile

EFFY / YOUR AK-V COMPANION GUIDE

Get to know your AK-V.
Then make it your own.

New to tufting? A tufting gun pushes yarn through cloth stretched over a frame to build your design. This guide takes you from meeting the machine to threading it, making your first lines and trying a different texture.

Keep it beside you as you learn. Start with setup, then choose the tutorial for the yarn you’re using.

01 / MEET YOUR MACHINE

A few familiar parts.
Lots of possibilities.

The AK-V arrives set for cut pile: its scissors cut the yarn into individual tufts, creating the soft surface you can shape and carve. It is an electric machine and doesn’t need an air compressor.

A closer look at the EFFY Purple AK-V. Watch the complete machine tour at 10:10 for the controls and moving parts from every angle.

  1. 1Needle & pusher foot

The needle carries yarn through the cloth. The pusher foot rests firmly against the stretched fabric.

  2. 2Yarn guide

Thread the yarn through this guide and the needle, following the threading tutorial.

  3. 3Front handle

Use your other hand here to help guide and steady the machine.

  4. 4Trigger

Press the trigger to run the machine while you tuft.

  5. 5Main grip

Hold the rear grip while keeping the gun perpendicular to the cloth.

  6. 6Power lead

Connect the machine using its supplied power adapter.

  7. 7Speed control

Adjust how fast the machine runs to suit your pace.

  8. 8Speed readout (rear)

The display on the back of the housing shows your speed setting. It faces away in this photo.

  9. 9Scissor closer

Closes the scissors to cut the yarn as the mechanism moves.

  10. 10LED light

Lights the needle area so you can see where you’re tufting.

  • Find your pace Adjustable speed from 1,000–6,000 RPM with a display, plus an LED light at the needle.
  • Comfort for longer sessions A quieter brushless DC motor, internal belt drive and reduced vibration.
  • Explore two textures Supplied at 14 mm cut pile. Loop pile is possible with a manual conversion.

02 / SET IT UP

Your first session starts here.

Carolyn’s full introduction walks through the AK-V from unboxing to basic care, needle-hole adjustment and threading. Watch it through, or jump to the part you need.

Before your first use: oil the machine as shown in the tutorial. Switch off and unplug before threading or making mechanical adjustments.

The needle-hole setting needs to suit your yarn. Follow the demonstration before changing it, and photograph its original position so you have a reference.

03 / TUFT YOUR FIRST LINES

Choose the tutorial for your yarn.

Both videos introduce tufting with the AK-V. Yarn structure and thickness affect spacing and the way the gun moves, so start with the one that matches the yarn on your cones.

Cloth tight as a drum

Stretch it evenly over a securely clamped frame so it supports the gun without bouncing.

Firm, even pressure

Keep the gun perpendicular to the cloth. Maintain the same pressure along the entire line, including at the top.

Follow the open foot

Move towards the open side of the pusher foot. For your first vertical lines, hold the gun upright and tuft upwards.

Start with a small test area. There isn’t one spacing measurement for every yarn; check both the stitches and the rug side as you learn.

04 / KEEP IT RUNNING

A little care, every session.

Cleaning and oiling are part of using your AK-V. Pause regularly to remove accumulated yarn fibres and oil the points shown in the tutorial, switching off and unplugging the machine first.

If something begins catching or behaving differently, stop and check the setup before changing several settings at once.

RETURN TO THE DEMONSTRATION

See where to clean and oil.

The care chapter in Carolyn’s introduction shows where to work on the machine.

05 / TRY ANOTHER TEXTURE

Make room for loop pile.

Cut pile creates individual yarn ends. Loop pile leaves the yarn in loops for a different texture. Your AK-V can do both, with a manual conversion for loop pile.

The full tutorial shows the conversion, how to return to cut pile, testing the result and a comparison with the dedicated AK-II loop-pile machine. There is no automatic cut/loop switch.

Before adjusting: switch off and unplug. Photograph and measure the original positions. Watch the complete process and understand how the scissors open and close before making changes.

Contact EFFY if the parts shown differ from yours or you’re unsure about their positioning.
