Your 100 × 200 cm piece of primary cloth is the surface you tuft into. Stretch it evenly across a stable frame and leave a margin around your design.

For a floor rug, choose suitable non-slip secondary backing, binding and adhesives separately.

Use one of your three threaders to draw your chosen yarn through the AK-V. Switch the machine off and unplug it before threading.

Plan your first rug

  1. Design
  2. Yarn bundle
  3. Your front door
  4. Tuft

Choose your design size, measure the usable area inside your frame and plan your EFFY Cotton Blend colours. Yarn is purchased separately from Bare Basic.

Fit the working area.

For an EFFY 90 × 90 cm frame, start with the recommended 80 × 80 cm design space. Measure your own usable area and allow room for practice and finishing edges.

Plan your yarn.

The Cotton Blend planner is for EFFY Cotton Blend yarn. Check the amount of each colour you own or have ordered. Start with the colours you need for this rug.

Make a practice sample.

Use the planner’s quantities as estimates. Your pile height, line spacing and tufting density affect how much yarn you use.

Before your first rug

What to know before you start.

What comes with every kit?

The purple AK-V set up for cut pile, a 100 × 200 cm piece of primary tufting cloth and three threaders. A frame, carver or matching carving guide is included only with the option that names it.

What should I have ready separately?

Choose your own tufting yarn and a purpose-made rug adhesive. For a floor rug, gather suitable non-slip backing, binding and adhesives for your finish. Have fabric scissors for cutting materials and any trimming and care tools you need. If you choose No Frame, have a suitable frame ready.

Can I start without a powered carver?

Yes. Select No Carver and start with the tufting lessons. Leave the pile uncarved or tidy the edges by hand with suitable scissors you buy separately. The getting-started guide covers both paths.

Which carving guide fits my kit?

Choose Rosewood or Wireless with the matching Easy Clip, or Heavy Duty with its own matching guide. Your kit includes the guide only if the selected option names it. Follow the instructions for your carver model.

What kind of workspace do I need?

A sturdy work surface where the frame can be securely clamped. Leave room to work comfortably and check both sides of your rug. Allow a separate area for trimming and finishing, and follow your adhesive’s ventilation instructions.

Can I make cut pile and loop pile?

The AK-V arrives set for cut pile. It can also make loop pile through manual conversion. Start with cut pile while you learn, then follow the model-specific conversion instructions linked from your guide.

What is the machine warranty?

The AK-V includes a six-month machine warranty. See the shop FAQs for the warranty terms.
